Description and analysis of the mosaic from Lod, discovered in 1996 and currently on a tour of North American museums. It is suggested that the patron who commissioned the mosaic was a ship owner who may have been involved in transporting wild animals for the arena. He was probably not Jewish, although the mosaic studiously avoids the use of human figures. |
