Account of the excavations of Nathan Davis, who, between 1856 and 1859, obtained fragments of an important calendar mosaic now in the British Museum, as well as a Muses mosaic and other pavements from a luxurious villa at Gammarth. Though not a scholar, Davis was energetic and highly practical: among other things, he pioneered a system of lifting mosaics by gluing canvas to the surface and turning the result face-down into wooden cases. |
