A theatrical device on the Late Roman stage: the relief of Flavius Valerianus

Around the re-interpretation of the funerary relief of Flavius Valerianus (second quarter of the 3rd century A.D.) from the Villa Doria Pamphili collection in Rome, the author mentions several mosaics related to theatre and music: a Greek mosaic in Patras (end of the 2nd century A.D. or the beginning of the 3rd), where a series of actors, musicians and athletes appear ; two documents located in Piazza Armerina, one depicting several children in the roles of musicians or actors (second quarter of the 4th century A.D. ?) and the Circus scene ; the circus mosaics from Silin and Lyon, and the mosaic pavements of the triclinium and the adjacent portico in the House of Menander in Mytilene (end of the 3rd century A.D. or beginning of 4th), which include, in addition to Menander’s and the Muse Thalia’s images, eleven panels with scenes from this author’s comedies.
