The paper analyzes the use of meander pattern on mosaics as well as its relation with other forms of art. Examples of meander motif on mosaics have been traced as early as 5th c. B.C. and have been in use for a long time. Four main types of the pattern have been identified: swastika, hook, crenellated and broken meander. The author concludes that the meander is not a pattern which is peculiar to mosaics and has been used long before in art and architecture widely. |
