Petrological analysis of materials used in mosaics and opus sectile of the early years of Roman Britain has established that they were not imported but sourced locally, and almost entirely from the Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks of the Poole-Purbeck region of east Dorset. Examples range from Exeter (Devon) and Caerleon (Monmouthshire) in the west to London and the villa of Eccles (Kent) in the East. Observations are made on how the materials were procured and prepared. |
