A review of pieces of mosaic which have appeared on the London art market in 2009-2010. Many of them are likely to be modern fakes or genuine but heavily restored; however, some are probably ancient, notably a panel depicting the triumph of Venus, who is carried on the back of a sea-centaur while a Triton emerges from behind her: the composition is similar to, but subtly varied from, those of a number of pavements in North Africa. |
