The architecture and history of the monastery of St John Chrysostom at Kousovendis

Three different opus sectile pavements in varying states of preservation, all of which decorated the katholikon of the monastery, are described and illustrated by the author. Their designs, already mentioned elsewhere, are very rich and intricate, and they include one large panel of several interlocking geometric shapes formed by thin strips of marble seen against a dark ground. Variations of octagons primarily compose this centralized pattern which features a beautiful eight-pointed star in the middle, containing its own octagon and viewed within a wider octagon having triangular tips (fig. 48) This church provides the only examples of opus sectile floors of certain medieval date from Cyprus.
