The Late Antique hearths in the partioned and ravaged rooms with mosaic flooring of the Roman maritime villa on the Vižula peninsula near Medulin are an example of the transformation of Antique buildings into nucleated settlements, the precursors of early medieval villages. A degradation of the quality of life is visible from the ratio: one hearth in one room per family. These changes, reflecting a form of barbarization, occurred in the 5th and 6th centuries, in the period of the Byzantine wars, against the Goths and the Avar and Slavonic raids in Istria. |
