A survey of recent rescue archaeology in France includes an account of a finely decorated Roman house revealed by excavations in advance of the construction of an underground carpark in Nîmes (Bd Jean Jaurès). Two adjoining rooms were paved with figural mosaics, one displaying Dionysiac subjects in a scheme of elliptical and 'cushion'-shaped panels (figs. 6-8), the other containing a scene of Achilles on Skyros in its central field. |
