Publication of a newly discovered mosaic at Queen Camel (Somerset) and reinterpretation of two mosaics from Brislington (Bristol, formerly Avon), here seen as having formed a single pavement of a bipartite room. The layout and motifs of the Queen Camel mosaic can be paralleled at other sites in the vicinity, notably Halstock, Lopen and Hurcot; at Lopen there is an alcove on one side of the antechamber, opposite the entrance, as at Queen Camel, and its plain tessellation may indicate that it contained an item of furniture such as a sideboard. The Brislington mosaic is very similar to one at Bradford-on-Avon (Wiltshire); both were probably laid in rooms created by merging independent rooms. |
