A corner of a mosaic pavement in a cross-range at the north end of an aisled building which formed part of a villa complex showed part of a panel of spaced swastika meander enclosing squares of chequered pattern set at 45 degrees. The mosaic had been damaged in antiquity and patched with greyish tesserae. There are links with mosaics at other sites in the region, notably Halstock and Lopen, and all may be attributed to a group (or sub-group) of craftsmen perhaps based at Ilchester and active in the last years of the fourth century. |
