The mosaic pavements of the legionary fortress at Caerleon are examined, to illustrate the point that mosaics were more common in military buildings than is often realised. Special attention is given to a labyrinth mosaic, possibly found in the block north-east of the principia, and to a pavement in the fortress baths which featured a curious pear-shaped object bedecked with streamers. This object is identified as an amphora dredged from a shipwreck; the streamers would have represented seaweed. |
