The famous civil engineer Thomas Telford (1757-1834) was active in archaeology while practising as an architect in Shropshire early in his career. Among the drawings which he left was one of a geometric mosaic discovered in 1793 at Lea, 9 km south-west of Shrewsbury (p. 367 and fig. 5). |
