Ε΄ (5th ) Ephoreia of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities

Three floor mosaics have been revealed during the excavation of a late roman building with atrium in Gytheion. The atrium was decorated with a geometrical pattern; a series of rectangular panels are framed by guilloches and each panel contains various motifs such as intersecting circles forming quatrefoils, star-like motifs, lozenges, zigzag etc. In another room a black and white mosaic with a figural scene was found, of which only the outer band survives, featuring spiral-meanders, swastikas and interposed rectangular motifs. Parts of this mosaic had been partially restored during antiquity. A third mosaic with white and red quatrefoils was revealed. The mosaics are dated to the 3rd-4th c. A.D., but parts of them were later used as layers of tombs. They have been removed from their original site and are now stored in the laboratories of the Ephoreia.
