The article examines the typology of the triclinia of the private houses which have been excavated during the two last decades in Thessaloniki. The buildings date from the 4th to 6th century A.D. and most of them had survived up until the earthquake of the 7th c. The triclinia were richly decorated with frescoes or marble revetment and most of them were paved with tessellatum, or opus sectile, or marble slabs. The article contains brief references to the pavements and relevant bibliographical notes. |
