The two groups of mosaics with the Seasons of the Year, discovered between 1985 and 1987, in the pars urbana of the Roman Villa of Rabaçal, dating from the second half of the 4th century, is of great interest to us, as it has brought to our knowledge a wider artistic variety of human representations in Roman mosaics in Portugal. We believe that they constitute the beginning of Byzantine art, whose golden age culminated during the time of Justinian (527-565). In fact, these figures are considered ‘ambassadors’ to the Byzantine and Ravennatic Art. (D'après le résumé de la revue) |
