The author argues that the motif at the centre of the pavement in a colonnaded court in the Maison du Péristyle Figuré at Pupput is not (as normally claimed) a lighthouse but a fountain spouting water. The decoration of the pavement, with columns converging on this central feature, and rose sprays in the intercolumniations, would imitate a peristyle garden as if reflected onto a surface of water. |
