Altıntepe Church is dated to mid 6th c. A.D. (Justinan period). The building is directed to the east with its apsis, the entrence was probably on the northern side. The three-aisled building has a basilica plan and has an interior area of ca. 220m2. The whole floor of the church except for the pastophorion was decorated with opus tessellatum mosaics. Depicted are geometric and floral motifs as well as animals arranged in rectangular panels. Remains show that, besides the floor, walls and arches of the church were also decorated with mosaics and wall paintings. The building underwent several renovations, the final destruction is dated to 7th c. A.D due to the Arab invasions. |
