Antandros 2003 – 2004 Yılı Kazıları

Excavation at the « Slope House ». Late Roman house decorated with mosaics (opus tessellatum). Six rooms opening to a gallery (4,30 x 32,90m) decorated with mosaics (opus tessellatum). A seventh room at the eastern end of the gallery is also paved with opus tessellatum. In 2004, the excavation of the rooms have been completed. It has been revealed that the walls of room nr. 3 – which decorated with an opus sectile floor – are revetted with marble slabs. Excavation of room nr. 7 at the eastern end of the gallery has also been completed in 2004. The room consists of two parts (the eastern part has been identified as an apodyterium) decorated with opus tessellatum in geometric patterns as well as wall paintings. At the narrowed passage between the two parts is a mosaic inscription wishing good will for Masgareites, the owner of the house. The apodyterium opens to a tepidarium in the south. The traces on the mortar shows that this unit was originally decorated with opus sectile in checkerboard pattern. Restoration of the opus tessellatum mosaics and the wall paintings.
