The article presents the results gained from the petrographical analysis of tesserae samples gathered from Cilician mosaics. Thin sections of these samples have been examined in order to identify the different stone sorts. The results show that the main type of stone used for tesserae was limestone, this was used for shades of white as well as other colours. Use of marble as tesserae material was uncommon and was limited to shades of grey as a secondary use. |
