Ephesos 2008

Excavations along the polygonal outer wall of the theater and the neighbouring insulae. A staircase between the S2 and S3 entrances of the theater and an opus tessellatum mosaic floor with geometric patterns have been revealed. Investigation of later settlements built on the palestra of the Harbour Gymnasion. These houses are decorated with rich wall paintings, mosaics and opus sectile pavements and seem to have two phases. Excavations at the Harbour Necropolis. A grave monument housing 5 graves and 55 burials has been revealed which was already subject to treasure hunting activities. The floor of this monument was paved with monochrome mosaics and the walls were decorated with wall painting. 3rd c. A.D. Restoration of the wall decoration in Wohneinheit 6 (in the « Slope Houses »), using original marble fragments. A graffiti at the back side of one of the marble fragments gives A.D. 119 as terminus post quem for the wall decoration.
