A floor mosaic and a wall painting revealed during the rescue excavations carried out by Istanbul Archaeological Museums (1997-1999) at a private property in Cankurtaran, Sultanahmet, Istanbul (Constantinople). The building has been identified as an hagiasma and two main phases have been distinguished. The so-called unit F belongs to the earlier phase and consists of a polychrome floor mosaic in opus tessellatum with geometric patterns (last quarter of 5th c. A.D.). The so-called unit E belongs to the later phase and consists of a wall painting in a niche, depicting Virgin Mary with Child Jesus (mid 11th - 12th c. A.D.) |
