Excavation and Research at Elaiussa Sebaste : The 2002 Campaign

Opus sectile floor decorating the northern aisle of the basilica added to the Roman agora during the Byzantinian Period. Remains of a polychrome mosaic (opus tessellatum) in the northwest corner of the basilica pertinent to the colonnaded portico of the agora (2nd c. A.D.). A polychrome geometric mosaic (opus tessellatum) and segment of a black & white mosaic revealed during the removal of collapsed material in the Port’s Baths. Numerous marble fragments of opus sectile revealed in the area west of the circular building. These probably originate from the building and have been thrown out at the time of it spoliation. Restoration & Conservation of the opus tessellatum mosaics in the Port’s Baths and of the opus sectile floors decorating the Byzantinian basilica in the agora.
