The pantomime Theonoe on a mosaic from Zeugma

The purpose of this paper is the study of a mosaic from Zeugma, probably dating from the early 3rd century A.D. It has the characteristic layout of a triclinium and consists of two panels surrounded by elaborate ornamental patterns: a larger one, facing the entrance, which shows the scene of Achilles on Skyros, and a smaller one, facing the area where the couches were, with the story of the two sisters, Theonoe and Leukippe, preserved by the Roman mythographer Hyginus. Both panels have inscriptions. The author focuses on the discussion of the latter scene. In the paper some other mosaics are mentioned: a mosaic in a late Roman villa at Noheda (Cuenca), which represents two scenes of a pantomime dancer (p. 413-414 and 415, note 11) ; the mosaics of the House of the Red Pavement at Antioch (p. 414) ; a mosaic, still from Antioch, showing two priestesses of Isis (p. 424, note 33) ; a mosaic with four masks at Piazza Armerina (p. 419, fig. 5), and a mosaic from Elis showing a mask that represents Polyhymnia. Moreover, some mosaics from Zeugma are also cited, such as the panel from the triclinium of the House of Poseidon (also House of the Dionysiac Télétè) with the story of Daidalos and Pasiphae or the mosaic of Achilles on Skyros from the same house (p. 415 and 426).
