The Auduneos Mosaic : A calendar illustration

La mosaïque portant l’inscription Auduneos, discutée par R. Ling (Mosaic, 37, 2010, p. 15-16), pourrait être authentique (en dépit des apparences) et avoir appartenu à une mosaïque de calendrier. Auduneos (= Audunaios) est en effet le nom du mois de janvier dans le calendrier macédonien ou syro-macédonien. Or, le personnage vêtu de la toga picta et portant la mappa et le sceptre (cf. I. Jesnick, Asprom Newsletter, 56, 2010, p. 3-5) représente le consul donnant le signal officiel du départ des courses au cirque, image traditionnellement liée au mois de janvier dans les calendriers. La forme arrondie du panneau à la partie supérieure fait aussi penser à la composition circulaire d’une mosaïque de calendrier (cf. mosaïque de Carthage, British Museum). (JB) A standing figure depicted on a mosaic panel offered to a London art-dealer in 2009 was correctly identified by I. Jesnick as a consul holding the mappa and sceptre (see BullAIEMA, 22, 2011, no. 630bis); this is corroborated by the accompanying inscription Auduneos, which is a misspelt form of Audunaios, the name of the month January in the Macedonian calendar. The image of the consul dropping the mappa to signal the start of the races in the circus is traditionally linked with this month in Roman calendars, and the form of the panel, a wedge-shaped sector from a circular scheme, would indicate that the figure was one of a series of personifications of the months in a calendar mosaic.
