The author speculates about the meaning and symbolism of zodiac mosaics found decorating Jewish synagogues (see an illustration of the 4th-century pavement with a zodiac at Hamath Tiberias). It is claimed that such mosaics are not only calendars derived from Hellenistic artistic sources, but that they also have a mystical significance. They form part of a decorative program in synagogues leading from an earthly and mundane setting to the throne of God. The zodiac and its central image of the Invincible Sun is a bridge to the heavens and the mystical experience of the divine. |
