Fifty-one glass tesserae from the monasteries of Daphni and Hosios Loukas were subjected to chemical analysis. After the elimination of examples that belonged to later restorations, it was determined that the original Byzantine tesserae were produced with plant-ash based glass. Those from Hosios Loukas show a more homogeneous composition than those from Daphni. The major differences are conditioned by the presence of opacifiers and colourants. |
