Okeanos in Zürich

Publication of a mosaic panel depicting Okeanos, his name labelled in Greek, reclining in the bottom left corner of a field sprinkled with roses. The panel, whose provenance is unknown, was bequeathed to the Archaeological Institute of the University of Zürich by H. Koradi (died 1988). There is evidence of reworking to left and right of Okeanos, and part of the left arm may have been confused with a reed that the figure was holding. The background roses suggest an origin from the area of Antioch and Apamea and a date in the second half of the 5th or the first half of the 6th century.
