Roman villa (villa urbana) in Nin (Aenona) is the largest site with ancient mosaics preserved in situ in Croatia. The discovery of that villa has opened a new chapter in the study of ancient mosaics in the eastern Adriatic.
The article analyzes the mosaics from a stylistic and morphological point of view after a stratigraphic analysis, followed by a petrographic analysis and a comparative study of the finds in the villa (debris of frescoes, pottery, coins and other finds). The complex structure of the mosaics and the rich decorative and figural repertoire help us to reconstruct the existing social and cultural context. |
