The review contains a report, by Martin Papworth (p. 248), on excavations conducted in advance of the construction of a new cover building over the west range of the Roman villa. The corridor mosaic, consisting of panels of interlocking circles alternating with guilloche mats, was uncovered for the first time since the 1860s. Also exposed were the pelta mosaic in room 5b and the red and white striped mosaic in room 6a. The work enabled observations to be made on the sequence of phases: for example, the mosaic in room 5b turned out to have been cut by the construction of room 6 and was patched with white tesserae. |
