This essay focuses on the research made in an octagonal bath-house at Bax Farm, north of the village of Teynham, which lies just west of Faversham (Kent), and dates to the end of the reign of Constantine or slightly later. The pool had been covered with opus signinum and painted blue; some small cubes of coloured mosaic still survive on its vertical face. The floor of the large hot plunge baths (room X) was tessellated (in black, white, red and yellow), the stones being set in a thick opus signinum. Other opera signina and mosaic tesserae are mentioned. |
