A survey of rescue excavations undertaken during the 1970s and 1980s in the Knossos valley uses mosaics to shed light on the social status and functioning of houses within different parts of the city. The author argues, from a concentration of western-style mosaics in the north of the valley, for the presence of Italian settlers following the granting of colonial status in 27 BC. |
