Palazzi di Casignana near Locri : A palatial residence in late-antique Calabria

This paper focuses on the Roman villa discovered at the town of Palazzi di Casignana on the Ionian coast of Bruttium – modern Calabria –, near Locri. Dating originally to the 1st century A.D., it was rebuilt on a grand scale between the 3rd and mid-4th centuries. More than twenty rooms were embellished with geometric and figural floor mosaics (these last ones include four Nereids each riding a sea-monster, the Four Seasons, and a drunken Dionysos), as well as opus sectile in the frigidarium. Because of the coloured glass tesserae found, the author believes that glass mosaics probably decorated some of the vaulted ceilings. She also mentions the existence of wall frescoes.
