This article re-examines Christian ceiling-decorations with representations of starry skies, and primarily the mosaic vault of the so-called Mausoleum of Galla Placidia at Ravenna, probably a chapel for the worship of martyrs. It is suggested that the visual effects of the mosaics were instrumental in creating a particular relationship with the ancient viewer: the stars could be seen not only as a depiction of the sky but as a manifestation of the radiance and power of the saints in their role as intermediaries between earth and paradise. |
