The author uses clues in the mosaics of the apse and triumphal arch to support his theory that the choice of location for the Church of Sts Cosmas and Damian, the first Christian cult building in the centre of Rome, was dictated by the Jewish associations of the site. It was installed in the south-east corner of the Templum Pacis, where Vespasian had dedicated the treasures from the Temple in Jerusalem. Some hints in the wording of the mosaic inscription may hint at the former presence of the treasure (removed from Rome by the Vandals 70 years before the creation of the church by Pope Felix IV, AD 526-530), and the seven gold candlesticks which frame the enthroned Lamb of God may allude to the seven-branched menorah which formed a prominent part of the treasure. |
