The author introduces a new methodological approach to the study of mosaic floors of the Byzantine period in Jordan. It consists in an analytical and comparative study of iconography and technique applied to the Madaba Mosaic Map, and to Sts Lot and Procopius Church of Khirbat al Mukhayyat (situated in the same diocesan district). This study aims to provide a date for the Map mosaic. In particular, shared stylistic and technical similarities of the two floors make a strong case that they were manufactured by the same artisans, thus suggesting the date of A.D. 557 as the probable period of the Map mosaic’s creation. |
