Nitl excavation campaign 2006

During the summer of 2006 a short excavation campaign took place in the village of Nitl in two areas: the presbytery of the North church and the courtyard of the ecclesiastical complex. A small portion of the pavement of the presbytery was unearthed, showing a mosaic pavement decorated with a swastika motif in red, yellow and black tesserae on a whitish background in a good state of preservation. The same motif frames the mosaic pavement of the adjacent north diakonikon, confirming that the two churches arose in the same chronological phase. It was not possible to determine if the decoration continues due to the position of the modern shop built over the fallen arches of the same presbytery, that preventing further in-depth investigations.
