The rescue excavation conducted in the village of Samar uncovered part of a Byzantine building compound. The conserved parts show an entrance leading to a room decorated with a mosaic pavement composed of two panels. The first, to the south-east, enclosed in a frame of florets, has a grid of rectangles with roses in each part and a cross to the south. The second panel, to the north, is decorated with a deer facing east, set on a background of chalice-shaped flowers. The pavement can be probably dated to the second half of the 6th century. |
