Una cappella nella regione di Suf – Jerash

An fortuitous discovery in the spring of 2004 brought to light a funerary chapel in Suf. The small square room is decorated with a mosaic pavement, oriented east-west with an entrance to the south. The mosaic features a rectangular panel with a grid of squares in both its western sector and northern side. A second panel to the south shows two oblong fruits, a basket, a fish and a basket full of fruit. The eastern area is divided into two sections with uniform white tesserae and a figurative motif comprising a bird near a tree and two plants normally used in Nilotic scenes. The last sector shows a square panel with three registers: two peacocks (a male and a female) with the characteristic crest on its head, followed by a second register with a twig of leaves and fruit and a bird with open wings. The third register depicts two cucumbers or eggplants between five vertical elements held together by a central string referring probably to grain heaps.
