During the construction of a hotel in Hatay/Antakya (Antiocheia), approx 300-400 m away from the church of St. Peter, an opus tessellatum mosaic, probably decorating a public building, has been revealed. With its surface area of 850 m2, the pavement is the largest known mosaic in the world. It consists of geometric patterns and is tentatively dated between the 2nd and the 6th c. AD. |
