Grosses Mosaik in Antiochia ad Cragum im Rauhen Kilikien freigelegt

An American and Turkish archaeological team under the joint direction of Michael Hoff, professor of art history at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and his Turkish counterpart Birol Can, has discovered a large mosaic dated to the 3rd-4th centuries, which decorates an ancient bath building near the site of Antiochia ad Cragum in the ancient province of Rough Cilicia. The mosaic, measuring 649 m² in surface, flanks a large open-air pool and has been approximately 40% excavated. The pavement has a geometric design with a grid of squares containing various filler-motifs such as star-shapes and interlaced designs. It is one of the largest mosaics unearthed in Turkey to date. The remaining 60% of the floor will be excavated in 2013.
