Excavation carried out in Küçük Ayasofya Street (150 m away from the Hippodrome, within the region of the Great Palace) in Eminönü, İstanbul. Remains of a building with a rectangular plan has been found in the north and northwest parts of the excavated area.
Western wall of the building displays two phases: The first phase is dated to 5th-6th c. A.D. The mosaic belongs to this first phase and was destroyed during later construction activities.
In the excavation of the southern part of the building, a mosaic floor was revealed below broken marble pieces. The mosaic pavement (probably 5th-6th c. A.D.) bears a geometric design with polychrome guilloche motifs. In the middle, a large fish is depicted inside a lozenge. |
