Tombs and burials in the monastery tou Libos in Constantinople

In the monastery tou Libos (also known as the monastery of Lips) in Constantinople, a late 13th-c. south Church of Saint John with tombs was dedicated to empress Theodora Palaiologina and her family. Of special interest are two arcosolia which contain poorly preserved mosaics with figural imagery and inscriptions. One retains a partial image of a woman with her hands folded over her breast; its inscription is missing (fig. 5). Another niche contains an undecipherable mosaic inscription and a figure bearing a different fragmentary inscription (fig. 6). These images respectively may have represented Theodora and her daughter.
