2009 Yılı Smyrna Antik Kenti Kazısı

Excavations of “the mosaic hall” in the agora of Smyrna proved that the mosaic hall is adjacent to and contemporary with the bouleuterion. The hall consists of 5 naves and has an east-west dimension of approx 30 m. Two phases of mosaics have been identified. The earlier pavement is bichrome, executed with yellow and black tesserae. The central panel bears a geometric pattern of adjacent irregular octagons with four concave sides (forming circles). The later pavement is surrounded by an ivy scroll, with the central panel bearing an orthogonal pattern of tangent interlooped circles and squares.
