Excavations of the tower situated on the highest point of Asar Adası (Asar Island) revealed a building (5.4 m x 16 m) – probably a three-aisle basilica – decorated with geometric mosaics and partially with opus sectile pavements. From stylistic evidence, the mosaics can be dated to 5th-6th c. A.D. Another in situ mosaic fragment was found between the building and the tower (fig. 4). Examination, documentation and in situ conservation of these mosaics were carried out by conservators from Gazi University. Petrographic analysis of the material has shown that the white tesserae were made from stones quarried in the ancient stone quarry in Bozdağ. |
