I colori del fasto. La domus del Gianicolo e i suoi marmi

During the works for ‘Roma 2000’ between the Vatican and Ianiculum hill, remains of a house with various rooms were found. As the walls had to be removed, paintings and floor mosaics were taken off. They are now on display in this exhibition and belong to the Museo Nazionale Romano. These are simple late 2nd-century decorations with aediculae and floating figures on a white plain ground. The most important finds consisted of marble veneer and capitals, probably stored here to be reused for new buildings, but stemming from a much earlier phase (Apelles 2004-2007, E.M.M.)
