The mosaics, which were unearthed in excavations between 2006-2009 upon encountering during an “Urban Design Project” in Haleplibahçe, Edessa/Şanlıurfa, and called Haleplibahçe mosaics due to their its location, are collected in this book. The Villa of the Amazons, the Geometrical Villa, and the Turkish baths architecture and mosaics are introduced presented, including each room, panel and figure; and examples comparisons from counterparts originating in other cities also are given. Until this these mosaics was were unearthed, no mosaic of imperial style was obtained known in Edessa, and although Edessa mosaics produced by local workshops were already known familiar; therefore it becomes even more important this increases their importance. Besides, these These mosaics also have the smallest tesserae in the region, with 490 tesserae per 10 cm. There is some special emphasis on the wise expression on the face of Kheiron Chiron the centaur on in the mosaic about Achilles’ life, . on the Also impressive are the horses figures in the mosaic about the hunt ing of the Amazon queens, and the agony of a wounded lion at with its last gasp, as we can observe thanks to the photographs and descriptions. Besides, there There also are two articles about restoration works on of the Haleplibahçe mosaics, and a detailed analysis of the tesserae and mortars of mosaics in the Villa of Amazons, respectively. The mosaics and remains structures, which are were unearthed in Haleplibahçe and belong to 2nd quarter of the 6th century, as well as and their restoration and analysis works study, are provided supplemented in this book through by literary written and visual descriptions. |
