The author considers the stylistic characteristics of mosaics from the palaces of Diocletian in Split, of Galerius in Thessaloniki and Romuliana, mosaics from the palace and from the thermae in Sirmium and from the villa with a peristyle in Mediana, which were produced between 295-300 and 340 A.D. The geometric mosaics from Split, Sirmium and from the small triclinium in Mediana bear the characteristics of “western” mosaics, while the geometric and figural mosaics from Romuliana (presentation of Dionysus), Thessaloniki and in the peristyle at Mediana (fluvius) were created under “eastern” influences. |
