Upon the demand for consolidation of parts of the cracked up masonry in the katholikon of the Daphni Monastery, a new method was devised and tested in the laboratory for the safe detachment of wall and vault mosaics. The method involved the construction of a cast with cloths and metal sticks and wires, which is placed on an adjustable support to permit small alterations or movements so as to allow the desired fit on the mosaic surface during the procedure of the mosaic removal from the wall. |
