This paper deals with the problems that arise when floor mosaics are displayed in museum environments. Removing a floor mosaic from its architectural context can have a number of disadvantages, but a display in a museum entails control over the environmental factors that complicate the in situ conservation. Other issues are taken into account, such as the removal of the original mortar bed of the mosaics that are being displayed in museums and the fact that there is no unequivocal method for the aesthetic restoration of the mosaics. |
